Facts on Coeliac Disease

Coeliac disease is a serious autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system attacks its own tissues when you eat gluten. This causes small bowel damage and means the body can’t absorb nutrients from food properly.

What causes coeliac disease?

Coeliac disease is caused by a reaction of the immune system to gluten – a protein found in wheat, barley, rye and triticale.

What are the symptoms of coeliac disease?

Symptoms range from mild to severe, and can include bloating, diarrhoea, nausea, constipation, tiredness, mouth ulcers, skin rashes and anaemia.

What is the treatment for coeliac disease?

A strict, lifelong gluten free diet is the only recognised medical treatment for coeliac disease. By removing the cause of the disease, a gluten free diet allows the small bowel lining to heal and symptoms to resolve.
